DNA Group Meeting

  • April 18, 2019
  • 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • LDS Church, 220 North San Pedro Rd., San Rafael

The next DNA meeting will be on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at 7 pm at the LDS Church.
In the first part of the meeting we will again have an open forum where members will be able to ask questions and share their stories of successes or difficulties that they have encountered while pursuing Genetic Genealogy. Come prepared to participate.

In the second part of the meeting, we will continue with exploring

Getting Started with DNA Testing - the Basics.

In February we dealt with AncestryDNA, in March we looked at My Heritage, and 23andMe.

In April we will look at Family Tree DNA. This company tests not only Autosomal DNA but also Y and mitochondrial DNA, and we will examine all three of these tests.

This is intended to help beginners understand what they see when they logon to see their DNA results for the first time.
Learn how
DNA will unlock a wealth of information about you and your ancestors. See how your ethnicity can often include regional detail and modern migration information. With Autosomal DNA you will have 1000s of DNA matches to research, but with Y and mitochondrial DNA you will have fewer. These are people who share a common ancestor with you. Some of these will be quite recent and some will be distant. These sites have tools to help you discover how you connect.

In regard to this presentation, you may want to look at this Introduction to FTDNA's Family Finder. This is one of a series of First Look Intro classes offered by DNAAdoption.org. You can skip the parts relating to Downloading and Uploading your DNA data, if you already have been tested by FTDNA.

If you want to know why you should consider all three types of DNA tests, read this short article by Diahan Southard,
Adoption DNA Match Strategy: Combine DNA Test Types.

We have members with a range of experience levels and we want to accommodate everyone, so come and ask your questions or share your experiences no matter what level you are at.

If you have something that you would like explained, do not be afraid to ask. We encourage everyone to speak out, no matter what level of experience they have. Those with more experience love the opportunity to discuss these issues, and we all learn something.

Please contact Vernon Smith to suggest a topic for a future meeting.

We meet each month (mostly) to discuss all aspects of Genetic Genealogy, and to provide a forum for discussion as well as time for answering any related questions.
